Busy Signal - Loaded

Calling Busy a "conscious" musician is somewhat disingenuous. He does the slack stuff as well as anybody and, much like his friend Mavado, he knows how to rack up a musical body-count. But, unlike almost any popular (male) Dancehall deejay, his makes an effort to educate as well as entertain . This album is widely acclaimed as the best Reggae/Dancehall album that came out last year (I would personally go with Serani's). It has my favorite song of last year, "Jail", and quite possibly the most absurd concept song ever, "Unknown Number". His flow on "Knocking at your door" is just insane, and "Real Jamaican" makes my African ass wanna be Jamaican for 3 munites 22 seconds. Enjoy.

Serani - The Future

Autotune is the worst thing to happen to R&B in the last decade. On the other hand, it is the best thing to happen to Dancehall (well, other than the Gully god) in the last few years. Unlike in R&B, where autotune is seemingly used as a gratuitious way to hide bad singing, In dancehall, it is used by cats like Serani and Demarco to add Queen-like operatic emotional sensationalism to their singing (think good Emo)...Or maybe I'm just deluded. Either way, Serani's album is straight bananas. Enjoy.

The first is that I can name a total of 3 songs between the two of them, and 2 of them have Umbrella in the title (counting the sick reggae remix), so it would have been kind of disingenuous to jump on the bandwagon. The other is that I am lazy. So, rather than think of something intelligent to write, I'm going to do a post instead. The question is simple: Does Cris Brown still have a music career?

I remember bumping the hell out of this album when it first came out. I was completely shocked by how talented Remy turned out to be (having only known about her from Lean Back and the Ante Up remix). I had forgotten about it in the interim, but my cousin asked me about it yesterday, and it brought back memories. Listening to it now, I clearly see the flaws in it, but they still can't overshadow the raw awesomeness of it. She manages to easily ride, subvert, invert, conform to, personalize all of the tropes of "female" rap. Thus, while not breaking any new ground, she fertilizes the used and sometimes abused ground and makes it bear sweet fruit again. Bon Apetit.

The Wright Album Samples (Compiled by Kasper of Rap1masse)

As far as I know this is a first, a sample set for a remix album. The remix album was made by Kasper/Isbjerg over at Rap1masse. It was so hot that I had to get ny hands on the samples. The album blends The Black Album with some great tracks from O.V. Wright's career. It's definitely worth a checkout. I plan on doing sets for his and other remix albums soon.

The summer between Junior and Senior year in high school ('03) was the height of my anti(non-New York)-Mainstream Rap era. That was, until I saw the video for Be Easy on Rap City. Prima Facie, it wasn't anything special, but something about this young southern fried rapper I had never heard of before just blew me away. I copped Trap Muzik and jammed to it for the rest of the summer. In the fall, Rubberband Man and 24 were dropped as singles and the rest, as they say, is history...Actually, no, it isn't. I have been jamming to Paper Trail for about a week, and though it's a decent album, all it did was remind me of how awesome Trap Muzik (and to lesser degree Urban Legend) was. Even though he has grown into a huge superstar, his music has lost that amatuerish (in the best sense of the word) effervesence that it did from '02-'04. Just my 2 cents. As always, a shoutout to Kev and Thomas for their assists.

Ivan from over at Hip Hop Is Read and I were having a conversation this afternoon about the pure awesomeness that is Bob Dylan when the question of Hip-Hop sampling of Dylan came up. He knocked me on to this track off the Soundtrack to the movie Hurricane (with Denzel). It's more or less, intentionally or unintentionally, a remake of Dylan's original. Considering that Dylan is the greatest songwriter to ever put pen to page, it is an unfair comparison, but Black Thought and co. (especially Mos) hold their own.

Another Collab with Kev & Thomas over at Thisishiphop. This album is Fat Joe's debut. Lyrically it was nothing special (this was before he had Pun to Ghost for him), but the beats were classic early 90's boom-bap. The sample set is suprisingly very Jazzy (and I mean Bop jazzy, not Funk jazzy). My fave track is the 30 minute-plus Miles Davis track "He Loved Him Madly". Enjoy.

Who Born You By Mistake?

Again, Maggie Ahuofe:

Obrafour ("The Executioner") traditionally is the person who beheads people sentenced to death by a chief. He came onto the rap scene in the late 90s. He was one of the fist rappers to spit solely in Twi. (Reggie Rockstone, the self-proclaimed Godfather of hiplife (and I don't disgree :)) rapped in both twi and english). What sets him apart from other Hiplife artistes is his prolific use of traditional proverbs and folklore in his rhymes.

Obrafour's first album was "Pae Mu Ka" which literally means "Split it say it" (It makes much more sense in twi, but an english approximation would be: "Say what's on your mind") . This album is arguable one of the most socially conscious and lyrically masterful Hiplife albums ever made. Notable tracks on this album include "Kwame Nkrumah" - a tribute to the country's first president and "Ghanaman" which is basically an interpretation of the cliched phrase: "Ask not what your country can do for you…." and "Yaanom" which calls on the people to listen!

Other Obrafour classics include "Who Born You By Mistake?" (One of the best insults you can say to a Ghanaian), "Maame" a tribute to mothers, "Ntitie Pa" good upringing.

His most recent album, "Heavy", saw him make a dramatic shift from standard Hiplife to the more traditional highlife style (Think Usher suddenly deciding to do an album full of 70's Stax soul). An average Obrafour fan might not appreciate Heavy but it takes more listens to fully appreciate the intricacies of what he does on that album. The title track is ridiculous!

For the longest time I detested Hiplife. I always judged it through a hip-hop lens and found it lacking in all of the things I loved in hip-hop. It was only recently that someone convinced me to give it a secnd chance and opened my eyes to the uniqueness of the genre. So when I decided to do a series of Hiplife posts I had no choice but to outsource it to her. So without further ado, Maggie Ahuofe on Kwaadee:

Okomfoo (Traditional priest) Kwaadee (which according to my mum is an abbreviation of "Kwame Adei" a common Ashanti name) burst onto the Hiplife scene in 2002/2003ish (ish because this is the first time I heard his music). He, like Obrafour, raps exclusively in Twi and what sets him apart from other rappers is his use of very authentic twi and intonations. The average Ghanaian that you'll meet speaks very "westernized" twi interspersed with numerous english word substitutes, but this guy...not so much. (ALEX: He also has by far the best sense of humor of any hiplife artist I know)

His debut album was "Okomfoo Se Koo" (which I cant translate directly because my twi is too westernized). The first single off this album, "Meyere ne Mempena" (My wife vs. My mistress), is a classic in its own right. Granted all men cheat (ahem) but you rarely hear a rapper openly debating the pros and cons between his gf & wife in trying to figure which one to stay with (This is very similar to the Chris Rock skit "Old pussy" vs. New pussy")(ALEX: It's more or less a Ghanaian version of Gregory Isaac's "Cool Down the Pace").

Basically his wife is old school and timid and the mistress is young, vibrant, wears "shiny shoes", parties like its going out of style and is a tantric fox in bed. He makes the "wise" choice in the end and sticks with his wife because he cannot keep up with the "new school". Notable tracks on subsequent albums include "Abrantie Mabre" (the eternally exhausted young man trying to make it the legitimate way) and "Efie Nipa" which laments the problems of society's impoverished population.

The main reason he is being featured on this blog is because of the track "K'a wo n'an to so" from his most recent album "Nsem Pii" (Numerous issues). Translated, it means "Close your legs". This is by far the funniest hiplife song ever (ALEX: I say funniest song ever, no matter the genre. I literally fell off my bed laughing the first time I heard this track). He discusses the anguish older men go through in efforts to remain faithful to their wives whilst younger women entice them. He encourages all women to have a sign on their privates with the labels "No trespassing" & "Private and individual property". This is infinitely funnier if you understand the lyrics. Until then, just take my word for it.

This album, Popular Demand, was, by a wide margin, my favorite hip-hop album of '07. For many people the name Canibus is synonymous with lyricist, so I couldn't do a series on lyrics without dropping at least one Canibus post. While he was always limited as an all-around music artist, no one, not even LL cool J, could doubt the kids spit game. Since I'm lazy I decided to kill two birds with one stone by picking a track that features both Canibus and Common, another artist I was bound to do a post about later. While this is far from Common (Sense) at his best, it is still a nice piece of work.

Though both brothers have lyrics for days, as Thomas posted in the comments, Pusha is head and shoulders above his brother. Picking a Pusha verse to post was no easy task. He has too many classic verses to count. I didn't want to post something from the official albums or the Got it 4 cheap tapes so I had to reach back. This track is the last track on their unrealeased debut, Exclusive Audio Footage. It may not be up there with his later mastrpieces, but it is still superior to 99 percent of the verses ever put to DAT.

Over the last 2 months, I've been hanging out with a couple of my uncles and they have opened my eyes to a lot of old Ghanaian music, especially highlife from the 80's and early 90's, that I had been too young to experience at the time. This is one of the guys they've been knocking me to. He has a great sense of humor (which I guess doesn't mean much since most of you won't understand what he's saying) and, more importantly, the music is funky enough to get a paraplegic on the dancefloor. Apparently he was BIG back in the day but I had never heard of him until recently. If you enjoy this, check out more of the stuff over at Awesome Tapes. Most of these sorts of music are only available on cassete so it's great that the guy(s) over there are digitizing them and sharing: I'm just a conduit.

I take a short Graduation/Birthday hiatus and the world looses it's mind. First, R.Kelly is not guilty (I've seen the video, it IS that nigga). Not that I'm mad, since I'm a fan, but WOW.

Second, Lil Wayne has 7 songs in the billboard top 100. Say what you will about the boy, but as he himself said, "If hip-hop is dead [commercially], I am the embalming fluid".

Lastly, Carter 3 is voted the best Wayne album. That is inexplicable. I am feeling the album and all, but I put C2, Drought 3, Dedication 1/2, and even Like Father, Like Son over Carter 3 as a complete piece of work. Carter 3 has too many commercial concessions, something that none of his other work can be accused of having. But to each his own.

Why Mixtapes are the New Albums

As I said in my last poll, I have completely dispensed with the Mixtape/Album demarcation. A hot 20 tracks (or in this case 36) is a hot 20 tracks, whether it is dropped by Atlantic or DJ "Shout my head off". This is a perfect case of where this dichotomy is completely useless. Every track on this mixtape except for 2 or 3 is over an original beat. The problem is that most of the samples (Beatles, anyone?) are unclearable, so this, what would be one of the most refreshing rap debuts in some time, is "relegated" to Mixtape status.

B.o.B, the 19 year old rapper/producer from Georgia, has crafted one of the most varied, heartfelt, origional albums hip-hop has seen in a long time. He isn't underground because he raps about "Haterz Everywhere" and he isn't mainstream because he actually has a sense of humor. He is like a cross between Devin the Dude and Andre 3k (lofty comparisons but a listen to this mixtape will convince anyone that I'm not insane).

I normally can't stand skits, but the skits on this album are genuinely funny and well thought out. Some have even been made into youtube videos: Locked Up, Muggin'. I think the two skits pretty much sum up the tongue in cheek attitude with which he approaches the rap game. The game needs it.

I'm listening to it as I type and I'm still blown away by the deft combination of humor and skill that B.o.B brings on every track.

My opinion of Carter 3 keeps seesawing back and forth. On it's own merits it is an enjoyable, occasionally brilliant (Dr. Carter, Tie My Hands, Let the Beat Build), album. At the same time I can't help but be disappointed in Wayne's drop in lyricism.

That said, a while back I played A&R and put together an album of the best original (hence no Drought 3 or Dedication 2) Wayne tracks that leaked over the past two or so years. Having listened to it again, I have to say that lyrically and conceptually it is more consistent and at points far superior to the actual Carter 3 (though Carter 3 might have the edge beats-wise). Hell, even the cover is better.

Thomas asked for it a few days ago but I had to find untagged versions of some of the songs. Here goes my application to be the mountain biking, guitar totting A&R for Wayne's next album. This is another Ghanaian album that's burning up my speakers. I had a friend of mine (the proverbial "cool ass chick" from the other post) do a mini review for her favorite songs on the album.

Odo - pro: simple, realistic, women love it... con- that song is too long, but it doesnt get boring

African Lady - Which African woman doesnt like being told how great their rear is and the amazingly impossible ways in which they should move it?

Obaa Besia - Very similar to his debut hit Linda, once again a song the ladies will swoon over

Truth is, I was never a huge fan of Ghanaian music until I started chilling with this cool ass chick recently who somehow got me into it. This is by far the best Ghanaian album I've heard so far: It's like a cross between Ali Farka Toure and Fela Kuti (Ok, I'm hyperboling again, but it really is very good). Its sound isn't truly representative of the rest of popular Ghanaian music, but I have a strong feeling that there will be more like this as time goes on. I strongly suggest that if you are feeling the 3 songs above, you should cop the rest of the album off eMusic (their subscription rates are insanely cheap, considering the number of drm-free tracks you can download for $9.99 (70)). I only started on this a few days ago but thanks to a major assist from Thomas, it's finito. This is probably Jay's worst recieved album even though, in my opinion, it's faaaaaaar better than volume 2 and on par with volume 3 and Blueprint 2, but obviously below his best. Much of the album is played so only about half the tracks use samples, the obvious ones being the "Superfreak" sample on "Kingdom Come" and the "Shaft in Africa" sample on "Show Me..." So Between Kev, Ivan, and I, we've done sets for all of Jay's albums (unless someone is REALLY dying to hear a sample set for "Street's is Watching"). Hooray for us...or not.

This is another Chris Paul-David West alley-hoop from Thomas. Ivan and Kev have already done most of Jay's catalog (except "Kingdom Come", which I started on a few days ago). Since this album was made at the height of the whole early 200o's Timbo and Swizzy induced Cassio-craze there aren't as many samples as there are on a usual Jay album; But the ones here are especially serious (The two "Big Pimpin" samples are the on opposite sides of the music spectrum but are both works of immaculate beauty).

I definitely haven't been repping the Bronx enough on this blog. I'll try to make up for it with this two-fer. As I told Ivan the other day, Fat Joe, in my opinion, is the only remaining commercially relevant rapper the Bronx has going for it. I didn't always like him but his last two albums have made a believer of me. He is not the most talented rapper out there, but he's a hard worker and you can tell that he is putting in the effort, even if the result isn't always pretty. He's always had a good ear for beats and these sample sets bear that out. Some of these joints will simply blow your minds ("Fugitive From Love" and "Women of the Ghetto" especially).

A shout out goes to Thomas for his help on both sets.

Ivan and I whipped this together last weekend. My favorite part of this set is the fact that Mark Ronson samples Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. I've always wondered why more producers don't sample them, you can damn near get them to come play it for you themselves.

This album is one of the few rap albums (about 10 -15) that actually live on my ipod in their entirety. The word underrated may be in and of itself overrated but this album perfectly fits. So if you've never heard this before, run to your nearest best buy...who am I kidding, just iTunes or rapidshare it.

Smif-N-Wessen, along with MOP, and to a lesser degree ONYX, brought new levels of lyricism and flair to shout-rap. Tek and Steele proved that it was possible to build entire careers around dressing like construction workers (Carhatt Jackets and Timbaland Boots) and stomping out bitchassness. This album stands as the masterpiece of the genre (though a strong argument can be made for MOP's Warriorz) and its sample set, as would be expected, is canyon-like.

Talib Kweli - Quality [The Samples]

This is one of the albums that introduced me to Hip-Hop and it has held up surprisingly well over the years. It is often cited as Kweli's definitive solo album and even as the definitive album of the whole early 2000's New York coffehouse backpack/Neo-Soul Aesthetic movement (I would personally give that badge to D'Angelo's Voodoo). Since most of the album uses live instrumentation the samples in this set are often not samples in the purest sense, but rather interpolations and resung/replayed parts. It's an eclectic mix of smooth soul (think Curtis Mayfield), hard soul (think Stax), psychadelic, jazz, reggae, and plain ol' hip-hop. The 4 sample sequence from track 6-9 are some of the most soulful 20 minutes I have ever experienced in my life.

There is one track missing from the set, Wilbur Bascomb's "Devil's Triangle" from his album "And Future Dreams". It has never been released on CD, so if anyone out there has it somewhere in their LP collection, hit me up in the comments or via email.

The difference between "White Trash" and "Red Neck" according to my resident expect on all things White America, Gabrielle (Gabster):

White trash fall into the category of rednecks. I would define white trash as someone with no class, grew up with plastic on their couches, fake nails, wears ripped denim (not expensive ripped denim), smokes a lot, dresses like cheap hooker (ripped denim shorts, fake nails, fake boobs, tatoos, lots of make up etc) and is usually ignorant/uneducated and racists.

Rednecks are very similar but red neck refers more to someone's way of life and thinking rather than their socioeconomic status. Red necks are usually from the south and "love america". Also red necks are fat while white trash is skinny. (usually)

I think a good example is Billy Ray Cyrus. NOT white trash but just a red neck. Britney spears- white trash. Bill Clinton- red neck. Justin Timberlake- white trash. Get it?"

The thanks for this one goes out to Thomas; he did most of the work; I simply played Stockton to his Malone.

I might be the only person in the world who loves this album. Most other Ghost fans look at it as his worst. As it was my Wu-tang B-boy Alpha, I have a weak spot for it. To this day, Love Session (or Detroit Heavenly for those of us who copped it in its completely messed up first printing) is one of my favorite love songs ever. Definitely wedding dance material. The only song on this album I'm not partial to is "Never Be The Same Again", it just doesn't feel like a Ghost song, lacks that innate soulfulness.

As some might know there are 3 classic tracks that were left off the album for sample reasons. 2, The Watch and Good Times, because Epic wouldn't shell out for clearance and 1, The Sun (where the title of the post comes from), because The Rza forgot what he sampled for the track so they couldn't even begin to clear it. I included the samples for The Watch and Good Times in the set.

The Problem with the set is that we couldn't figure out what songs were sampled for the last two tracks, Love Session and Street Chemistry. So if anyone has any ideas for those two samples, hit me up in the comments of via email.

I dare any Ghost fan to not flip completely the fck out at the 3:07 mark of "Storm in the Summertime".

Ernie Barnes

I meant to do this post right after the Uptown Saturday Night post but it slipped my mind. The original cover of USN was based on the cover of a Marvin Gaye album (which I use as the cover of the sample set) which was drawn by Ernie Barnes. Barnes is, along with Caravaggio, JM Turner and Frederic Remington (That Remington is owned by my College, I'll steal it before I graduate), one of my favorite artists of all time. His work, to me, represents what modern art should be and not that grotesque Picasso bullshit (except for Guernica, which is just incredible) . He is most famous for his sports based art, which is appropriate considering that he was an AFL player. Above are just a few of my favorite Barnes paintings.

As I said a few posts ago, The Fix has a permanent place my top 5 and Scarface is in my opinion the GROAT (DOA). I decided to combine the sets for his last two albums because both albums were short and to the point and so are their sample sets. The sample for "I ain't the one" is missing because the only info I could find on it is that it is called "North America", no artist or writer, so I pretty much have no way to begin digging for it. Other than that the prize for "sample that made me sweat" was Ronnie Dyson's "Sara Smile".

"It's a Cold world out there, sometimes I think I'm getting a bit frosty myself". Thus begins the greatest album to ever grace the hip-hop genre ((c)Alexander Opoku-Agyemang). I copped this album within a few weeks of its release and I haven't gone longer than a few weeks without bumping it since. When I relive my high school memories, this is the soundtrack. It was for my friends and I in the Bronx what Smells Like Teen Spirit must have been for suburban kids a generation before and The Ramones were to the generation (or so) before that. It was bleak, dissonant and devastated. It was about fury but not anger, cold without being unwelcoming.
Without it, I doubt very much that I would be a hip-hop fan today. It stretched my mind beyond the restrictive by-the-books-boom-bap let's-save-hip-hop New York underground bullshit (not all of it, but most of it) that I was an ardent disciple of back then. Consequentially, this expansion of the confines of hip-hop is what later allowed me to appreciate Dipset for what they were. The lyrics were mind-bending (I'm still (re)discovering nuggets of lyrical wisdom even now) and the beats, as evidenced by the far out sample set, were like nothing I had ever heard before. It redefined the term organized cacophony and the philosophy of creation through destruction. It redefined my conception of beauty itself (1.[||] 2. I'm deadly serious).

Here's a short and sweet sample set. Even though Wayne has fallen off hard over the last year or so (or maybe because he has), this album has slowly become one of my 3-5 favorite hip-hop albums of the last 10 years or so (Cold Vein, The Pretty Toney album, The Fix...). Doing this set took forever because finding the first and the last track (Willie Tee's "Moment of Truth" and Garland Green's "Love is what we came here for"), took luck, perceverance, luck, tech savvy, and another palm-full of luck to boot.

Like the rest of the samples I've posted so far, this album is a personal favorite (though the beats haven't aged as well as the Dipset albums(The Heatmakerz really were geniuses)). Lyrically it is Bean's strongest. Though a brigade of producers contributed to the album (and the beats reflect this), the samples are surprisingly consistent and balanced.

I found contradictary info as to which Carrie Lucas song ("Dance with you" or "Questions") was sampled on "Once Again It's On". I planned on including both in the set but I couldn't find even a snippet of "Questions" (off her 1978 album "Street Corner Symphony"). So if anyone has the song or the album, hit me up in the comments.

Putting together this set, I've learned to stop trusting linear notes. I was on a wild goose chase for the song "To get love...". The linear notes lists it as an Ultimate Music Experience song. I searched everywhere but couldn't even find a mention of the song outside of this album's linear notes. After having almost given up on it I had an epiphany at some point today and figured out that it was actually by the group Blue Magic. It still wasn't easy finding the track but thanks to the beautiful underworld ((c) Don DeLillo) of shady hip-hop/porn forums, I tracked down the original album.

Next Up is either Uptown Saturday Night or Beanie's B.Coming. The problem with USN is that I can only find sample listings for about half of the album (though the rest are very obviously also sample based tracks). I've found all the samples I know of, but I'm a little conflicted about posting a knowingly incomplete set.

This album stands as my favorite Dipset Album. It's an album I enjoy as much for its shortcomings as for its triumphs. This was the Heatmakerz at their chipmunk soulfullest. They sample everything from Il Travatore (if you don't know what that is, step up your opera game) to Mary J. Blige to Marvin Gaye and pitch everything up hummingbird style((c)Vast Aire). Juelz is young, raw and unpretentious. He drops adorably [||] cringe-worthy lines left and right but his potential shines through on every song. He has fun doing what he does and that ecstasy seeps through the speakers and infects the listener. It epitomizes the Dipset movement for me. It's imperfect; It's soulful; and in that it is human. As a 16 year old high school student living in a New York a world away from the Harlem they described in their music, it was this soulfully imperfect humanity, in all its corniness and weirdness, that drew me to it for the first time. 5 years later, the hooks remain.

Over the next few days I will drop sets for Diplomatic Immunity 2, Uptown Saturday Night, Carter II, Philadelphia Freeway, and a few other personal favorites so peep them (I would love to do one for MOP's Warriorz but I can't find the sample list). Another deep and eclectic samples set from the Dipset. Purple Haze is widely considered the creative apex of the Dipset/Roc-a-fella marriage [||]. I personally prefer the next album I will post, but I definitely enjoy this one. As an aestheticisist (someone who believes the value of art is in its beauty and enjoyability, hence my preference of Dipset to Jurasic 5 for example...and yes, I think I made up that word), I easily overlook the fact that the producers seemingly didn't dig too deep to find some of their samples ("Girls just wanna have fun" is the laziest sample in HiP-Hop history). Here's the next Dip-set (corny, I know). It's for Cam's first album for Roc-a-fella and his highest selling by far. It was helmed by the likes of Kanye, Just and the Heatmakerz so, as expected, the samples come Proper. The sample of "Dead or Alive" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. One Caveat, I couldn't find the full version of Joe Simon's "I'll take care of you", used by the Heatmakerz on "Boy Boy", so I included a 30 second snippet.
